4th May 2019

Mostly a calm and sunny day although the wind picked up a bit
late morning and it remained cold. Two Slavonian Grebes (Svarthakedopping) are
still present around Norrhamn, and a few more nestboxes were also checked for
the first time this season at the far north end of the island. By now there are
many Arctic Terns (Silvertärna) present
around the whole coast of the island making for a cool soundtrack along with
the Eiders! A Black Redstart (Svart Rödstjärt)
was around the lighthouse this morning.

3rd May 2019

A day of changeable weather, moderate winds and snow showers dominated
in the morning but by the afternoon the weather had calmed down a lot, aside
from the odd squall. The big news of the day was a female Black Woodpecker (Spillkråka)
which flew over the obs late morning and landed in some trees to the south, it
then flew back north right over our heads – what a beast! In the afternoon at
S. Udden two Red-necked Grebes (Gråhakedopping) flew east and 2040 Common
Eider (Ejder) were gathered offshore.

32 birds were ringed this morning.

2nd May 2019

Rain all morning prevented any nets being opened, so instead
we headed out to S. Udden late morning. This proved to be a good move with a stunning
2cy male Pallid Harrier (Stäpphök) coming in-off the sea, shortly followed by a Hobby (Lärkfalk).
There was less duck passage than yesterday but it did seem as though the rain
had dropped some passerines in as there were increased numbers of common migrants
like Robin (Rödhake) and Song Thrush (Taltrast). A Common Sandpiper (Drillsnäppa) was also on the rocks
here.

There will be two at the obs
tonight: Espen and Matt.

Wind: Northwesterly
Strength: 5-12m/s
Temperature: 3-7
Visibility: Moderate to good, occasionally poor
Cloud cover: 5-8/8
Precipitation: Intermittent rain throughout most of the morning,
with occasional showers in the afternoon, getting heavier again into the
evening

1st May 2019

A period of rain this morning starting around 09:30 meant
closing up all the nets early. As we were catching relatively few birds and several
flocks of seaducks had been passing over the obs, Espen headed down to S. Udden at 06:30 for a short seawatch which produced the highlights of 306
Velvet Scoter (Svärta) and two Red-necked Grebes (Gråhakedopping),
along with a moderate migration of other seaducks and auks.

47 birds were ringed this morning.

There will be two at the obs
tonight: Espen and Matt.
