A clear calm morning. Two lundsångare/greenish warblers were heard singing during the morning (before 10am) one at Våta vägen and one north of Saltmar. Two smålom/red-throated diver were in the north harbour and throughout the day gluttsnäppa/green sandpiper and rödbena/redshank have been seen migrating south.

At the beaver pool during the afternoon the first kejsartrollslända/Emperor dragonflies for this year at Landsort were flying and the first Slåttergräsfjäril/meadow brown butterfly, which is also the first for this year at Landsort, was on the playing field.

A windy and heavy overcast start to the day brightening up after 8am. The trastsångare/great reed warbler was singing in the north of Bremar at dawn, storspov/curlew and småspov/whimbrel were migrating south along the coast on both the east and the west during morning, there were more heard moving through than were seen due to my poor vantage point for observation.

A pleasant morning with light breeze and clear sky. The first fledgling törnsångare/whitethroat for Landsort this year was ringed and two Kustlabb/Arctic skua flew north mid afternoon. Fyrfläckad trollslända/Four-spotted chasers were active on the pond and gammafly/silver Y were feeding on the flowers along the road throughout the island.

The surprise of the day was a Privet Hawkmoth (Ligustersvärmare) on one of the net
poles when we opened the nets first thing, which we moved to a spot where it
wouldn’t be disturbed. There are very few records of this gorgeous moth for the
island. 16 birds were ringed, including a
brood of four Great Tits (Talgoxe) from a nestbox.

Six birds
were ringed today with a return to settled and warm weather. The Great Reed
Warbler
(Trastsångare) that was first caught two weeks ago and has been singing
from the reedbed at Bredmar every day since was recaptured again today, having
gained a significant amount of fat since the initial capture. Of note
insect-wise, thousands of Silver Y (Gammafly) have arrived on the island
in the last couple of days, whilst the number of Painted Ladies (Tistelfjäril)
has dropped off.

and both Greenish Warbler (Lundsångare) and Grasshopper Warbler

Another warm,
sunny day. The highlight was a stunning Bee-eater (Biätare) that was first seen flying
south over the obs at about 09:30, quite a surprise to see it emerge from a
wheeling mob of Swifts (Tornseglare), and fly low over the obs! The bird was
seen again flying back and forth around the obs, before finally disappearing to
the north about 10 minutes later, it was then heard briefly at Norrhamn by a
visiting birder. A Lapwing (Tofsvipa) also flew south over the obs this morning
and the Great Reed Warbler (Trastsångare) is still present and singing from the
northern end of the reedbed at Bredmar, often audible from the observatory!

A return to
calm conditions today and we were able to open all nets. 25 birds were ringed
in total of 18 species, including the first Great Spotted Woodpecker (Större hackspett)
of the year and the second Woodpigeon (Ringduva), many of the birds caught were
recently fledged young. In the sunny conditions this afternoon many butterflies
and dragonflies were on the wing, most notably huge numbers of Painted Lady (Tistelfjäril), which
are particularly numerous this year.

it was very still. Another few nestboxes were checked in the middle of the

opened this morning but the wind soon picked up and all nets had to be closed
by around 6am. A good chunk of the nest boxes in the middle of the island were
checked and 29 Great Tit (Talgoxe) chicks were ringed from them. Two Wood Warblers
(Grönsångare) were seen with one heard singing and a Woodcock (Morkulla) was
flushed from the forest floor.

A calm and overcast start to the morning becoming breezier by mid-morning, raining from 11am through the afternoon. Trastsångare/great reed warbler could be heard singing in Bredmar, a Nattskärra/nightjar was to the south of the Observatory, a Sparvhök/sparrowhawk went south on the west coast escorted by a small flock of Sädesärla/white wagtail, encouraging him to continue south.

Quite a breezy start to the day on an clear and warm morning. Trastsångare/great reed warbler was singing in the north of Bredmar, a male and female Törnskata/red-backed shrike were hunting around the Observatory and the first Tidig
mosaikslända/hairy dragonfly was noted for this year. Although frogs were not recorded during the spring this year there were a large quantity of tadpoles rising to the surface in the pond this morning, the frogs were definitely here!

It was another warm and sunny day and the whole island is buzzing with insect life! 21 birds were
ringed this morning including a Great Reed Warbler (Trastsångare), only the fourth ever
ringed at the station, an impressive bird in all respects. It was later
heard singing from the northern end of the reedbed at Bredmar. The Sardinian
Warbler
(Sammetshätta) was not seen
conclusively today, despite a number of birders making the trip over on the
boat to look for it. A Nightjar (Nattskärra) was seen near Saltmar.

On and off
rain this morning prevented any nets being opened today.
A Marsh Warbler (Kärrsångare) was singing at Södra Udden along with two at
Saltmar, and an Arctic Skua (Kustlabb) flew north. Other exciting news is that the Lesser Whitethroat (Ärtsångare) we retrapped last month sets a new longevity record for the species Europe (and very possibly the world), with a calculated lifespan of eight years and 11 months, 12m longer than the previous oldest known bird from the UK.

The month started on a real high with a stunning male Sardinian
Warbler
(Sammetshätta) ringed at Bredmar
mid-morning, the first record for Landsort and only the 10th for
Sweden. We also recaptured our oldest Lesser Whitethroat (Ärtsångare) on record which was
ringed eight years ago – good to see it is still going strong! Migration has
dropped off since the big rush around 19th May, and since then we
have mainly been recording the later migrants as well as increasing numbers of
local breeding birds.
