Windy
conditions continued through the night and prevented us opening any nets this
morning, the wind dropped off throughout the course of the day and by afternoon
it was very still. Another few nestboxes were checked in the middle of the
island with a couple of newly hatched Great Tit (Talgoxe) broods found. Two
Woodcock (Morkulla) were flushed from the forest floor.

The nets were
opened this morning but the wind soon picked up and all nets had to be closed
by around 6am. A good chunk of the nest boxes in the middle of the island were
checked and 29 Great Tit (Talgoxe) chicks were ringed from them. Two Wood Warblers
(Grönsångare) were seen with one heard singing and a Woodcock (Morkulla) was
flushed from the forest floor.

A calm and overcast start to the morning becoming breezier by mid-morning, raining from 11am through the afternoon. Trastsångare/great reed warbler could be heard singing in Bredmar, a Nattskärra/nightjar was to the south of the Observatory, a Sparvhök/sparrowhawk went south on the west coast escorted by a small flock of Sädesärla/white wagtail, encouraging him to continue south.

Quite a breezy start to the day on an clear and warm morning. Trastsångare/great reed warbler was singing in the north of Bredmar, a male and female Törnskata/red-backed shrike were hunting around the Observatory and the first Tidig
mosaikslända/hairy dragonfly was noted for this year. Although frogs were not recorded during the spring this year there were a large quantity of tadpoles rising to the surface in the pond this morning, the frogs were definitely here!

It was another warm and sunny day and the whole island is buzzing with insect life! 21 birds were
ringed this morning including a Great Reed Warbler (Trastsångare), only the fourth ever
ringed at the station, an impressive bird in all respects. It was later
heard singing from the northern end of the reedbed at Bredmar. The Sardinian
Warbler
(Sammetshätta) was not seen
conclusively today, despite a number of birders making the trip over on the
boat to look for it. A Nightjar (Nattskärra) was seen near Saltmar.

ringed this morning including the first Greenish Warbler (Lundsångare) of the month and the
seventh of the year, the most numerous species being Icterine Warbler (Härmsångare) with seven ringed.
Notably the Sardinian Warbler (Sammetshätta) ringed on 1st was also recaptured,
after keeping a low profile for the past three days. Additionally, three Great
Tit
(Talgoxe) chicks were ringed in a nestbox.

On and off
rain this morning prevented any nets being opened today.
A Marsh Warbler (Kärrsångare) was singing at Södra Udden along with two at
Saltmar, and an Arctic Skua (Kustlabb) flew north. Other exciting news is that the Lesser Whitethroat (Ärtsångare) we retrapped last month sets a new longevity record for the species Europe (and very possibly the world), with a calculated lifespan of eight years and 11 months, 12m longer than the previous oldest known bird from the UK.

The month started on a real high with a stunning male Sardinian
Warbler
(Sammetshätta) ringed at Bredmar
mid-morning, the first record for Landsort and only the 10th for
Sweden. We also recaptured our oldest Lesser Whitethroat (Ärtsångare) on record which was
ringed eight years ago – good to see it is still going strong! Migration has
dropped off since the big rush around 19th May, and since then we
have mainly been recording the later migrants as well as increasing numbers of
local breeding birds.

A quiet morning on Landsort. There was heavy cloud to start the day, leading to increased wind and rain by 6:30am. During the afternoon tornseglare/swift were seen at the nestbox site on the Observatory, hussvala/house martin and ladusvala/swallow were feeding low to the west and perching in the trees in the sheltered areas along the road.

It seemed to get darker following sunrise as the cloud rolled in, it brightened up by midday for a pleasant afternoon. Highlights this morning were göktyta/wryneck, which were heard singing at the southern and northern end of the island, rörsångare/reed warbler and härmsångare/icterine warbler that had arrived overnight and four tornseglare/swift were feeding over the reedbed.

A bright and still start to the day becoming cooler as it became overcast and breezy. The first stare (starling) chicks in nestboxes were ringed during the afternoon, six näktergal (thrush nightingale) were heard singing between the Observatory and north harbour. A gulärla (yellow wagtail) flew over going north and a göktyta (wryneck) was calling to the west of the Observatory. The kråka (hooded crow) was the second ringed at Landsort.

44 birds were ringed, including a Booted Warbler (Stäppsångare) caught late in the morning,
only the second record for the island, the previous being a bird ringed in September
2008. The sixth Greenish Warbler (Lundsångare) of the year was also ringed,
already making this a record breaking year for the species here (the previous
maximums were five in 1988 and 2018), continuing the upward trend of recent
years. As well as these the third Grasshopper Warbler (Grässhoppsångare) of the season was
ringed as well as the first Spotted Flycatcher (Grå flugsnappare). A 1st
year Greenfinch (Grönfink) was caught, the first fledgling of the year!

Warbler
(Lundsångare) took the total for the
year up to 5, already equalling the previous year records from 1988 and 2018.

The rain overnight had stopped by the time we opened nets at 03:30, and the day was a mixture of fog, cloud and sunny spells later on. The rain had obviously forced many migrants to land on the island as we had our highest day catch of the year so far, with 208 birds ringed. The commonest species caught was Lesser Whitethroat (Ärtsångare), with 103 ringed. There was also a high diversity of species with several firsts for the year, including Whinchat (Buskvätta), Grasshopper Warbler (Grässhoppsångare), Wood Warbler (Grönsångare), Red-breasted Flycatcher (Mindre flugsnappare), Red-backed Shrike (Törnskata) as well as another Greenish Warbler (Lundsångare).

Common Rosefinch (Rosenfink) was heard migrating at Södra Udden, where the first Yellow Wagtails (Gulärla) were also recorded and double figures of both Black-throated and Red-throated Divers
(Storlom and Smålom) flew past. At Saltmar in the evening were two Greenshank (Gluttsnäppa),
a Wood Sandpiper (Grönbena) and a Lapwing (Tofsvipa) flew
over.

Warbler
(Lundsångare) of the season, this is
the 3rd earliest ever caught on Landsort, with the two earlier records
both coming from last May. A Swift (Tornseglare) and a Lapwing (Tofsvipa) were seen flying over the obs
this morning.

The Serin (Gulhämpling) was still very much present around the lighthouse
area today in sunny weather and chasing away any other birds which dared to
come too close! A Hobby (Lärkfalk) and two Rough-legged Buzzards (Fjällvråk) flew north. 30 birds were ringed including seven
Bluethroats (Blåhake), the first Thrush Nightingale (Näktergal) of the year and the first Barn Swallow (Ladusvala) to be ringed this year.

The day started with dense cloud cover but
eventually the sun broke through. The Serin (Gulhämpling)
was still present in the
lighthouse area but is very mobile, a good variety of other migrants were also
observed around the south including Bluethroat (Blåhake), Wryneck (Göktyta)
and Whinchat (Buskvätta) as well as the first Common Swift (Tornseglare) of
the year migrating north.

127 birds were ringed this morning, the
second highest day total this year. The most numerous species was Willow
Warbler
(Lövsångare)
with 77 ringed, the first Bluethroat (Blåhake) of the season was also ringed.
