Good to spend time with Ebba and help her gain more experience ringing. Also a big thanks to Liam for hosting a very good two days for the youngsters who came yesterday and today. Very good of him to give his time so willingly to help the aims of the Observatory. Hopefully our young new members will stay many times into the future.

Janne and Lillian spent the morning at SUDD before leaving today.

Among these were the first three Waxwing (Sidensvans) of the year, part of a flock of about 40 which arrived late morning.

Overnight rain did not stop until 0900 when all nets were opened until 1415 with 98 new birds of 14 species. Among these was a Jack Snipe (Dvärgbeckasin) the first caught since 2014 and only the 18th trapped in 31 years.

The participants in the photography course arrived at 1100, together with a potential new member of nine years old, in time to see a good range of species being ringed, including the Jack Snipe and the Long-tailed Tits (Stjärtmes). Glad the sunshine arrived in time for the group to enjoy the island at its best – a successful course!!!

Håkan arrived for the morning to drop out the binoculars for next weekend, which have kindly been loaned to the Observatory by Gunnar Olssons poto. https://www.gofoto.se/

Håkan also saw the Jack Snipe – some lucky people out here this weekend!!!

There will be two at the Obs overnight; Chris & Kay.

The photography course is running this weekend and there is good signs of participants out and about on the island looking for good bird ‘models’ as well as landscape shots. Looking forward to seeing them all up at the Obs tomorrow.

Nilkas & Rasmus spent the morning in the north, but returned equally disappointed with their results!

Thanks to Tore for calling up to put the new router in, keeping us up to date and operational. Great also to have spent time with Rasmus: good company and a credit to the Observatory.

Nets opened at 0600, again limited due to wind strength, but had to be closed early due to Chris injuring his knee.

A total of 40 new birds of 7 species.

While Chris & Kay went to Nynäshamn to get treatment for the injury, Håkan and Jan very kindly stepped in to take a guided talk for 29 students and three staff for a school visit. Many thanks to them for taking this task on and glad to learn that Jan has become a member – hopefully we will see him again soon. Thanks also to Tore, Lennart, Jan and Håkan who helped get Chris to the pilot boat.

Limited net opening due to continuing strong winds, but at least some open today!!

Just 20 new birds of 9 species continues the terrible run of captures this month.

Mikael & Alan headed to SUDD for the morning and had an excellent time with significant movements of passerines during, especially during the first four hours – a summary to follow later. At Bredmar it was obvious that a big movement was taking place – spectacular movement of birds!!!

SToF members who had a talk yesterday called up at 1000 to see some birds being ringed, having been at SUDD for the morning. A further guided talk given to a family of 16 from 1115 until 1230.

There will be three at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay & Håkan.

16th September 2018

More nets opened this morning at 0545 until 1145 with less wind and slightly better direction than the last few days. This showed in better captures with 56 new birds of 9 species, including a few Chiffchaff (Gransångare) and a late Wood Warbler (Grönsångare) – only four birds caught on a later date than this. Nice to get a few birds while Liam has been out.

Niklas & Per are still up in the north, having left for there before daylight.

Mats & Lasse spent the morning at SUDD.

Thanks to Mats for bringing out provisions for the Obs this weekend as well as the new fire extinguisher and fire blanket. Thanks also to Liam for bringing out a plentiful supply of apples from his garden for the birds.

Some good energy this weekend for migration watching – lots of hours put in and good reward for those who took part!!!
