Heavy rain overnight and until after 1000 in the morning produced over 30mm of rain and prevented any netting this morning.

A trip to the north of the island produced sightings of very few passerines – in fact the island seemed largely devoid of small birds!

Only 9 new birds of 2 species, with four of those caught in the last net round. A truly terrible mornings ringing, though only one less than the number caught at Falsterbo Lighthouse garden this morning.

Sorcha arrives this afternoon to spend a week with her Mum, so Kay very happy about that!

At SUDD Pelle opened all nets at 0500 and closed at 0900 with just two new birds of two species.

At Bredmar, most nets opened at 0445 and the rest opened an hour later as the wind decreased slightly. All nets closed at 1100 with 37 new birds of 16 species, including another Härmsångare (Icterine Warbler) and two Gök (Common Cuckoo), the first time two have been caught on one day at the Obs.

At SUDD Liam had 8 nets open from 0500 until 1045 with 20 new birds of 10 species including the first Trädkrypare (Treecreeper) of the autumn.

Overall, 57 new birds of 19 species.

Mikael was a no-show last night, so there were just 4 at the Obs last night. Liam leaves this afternoon to give three at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay & Pelle.

Rain overnight delayed opening at Bredmar until 0600 when 14 nets were operated until 1015, with light showers through the morning eventually becoming heavy persistent rain at 1015.

A total of 25 new birds of 9 species made it worthwhile putting in the effort.

Janne left the Obs in the morning.

All nets opened at Bredmar at 0430 and closed at 1100 with 41 new birds of 12 species.

At SUDD all nets opened by Liam & Janne at 0500 and closed at 1045 with 28 new of 9 species to an overall total of 69 new birds of 15 species, the most notable being a Svart rödtjärt in SUDD.

Nets opened at 0430 with some closed at 1100 and the rest at 1145. A decent morning of 58 new birds of 13 species, with the first migrant Kungsfågel (Goldcrest ) and Rödhake (Robin) caught along with another two Härmsångare (Icterine Warbler) to give a total of 64 for the year, the highest year total at the Obs.

The majority of bird bags washed and dried.

In the afternoon Liam and Janne will trim the net area at SUDD and Chris & Kay are replacing some of the canopy nets. If time and energy permit, they will then start putting up nets in SUDD.

Nets opened at 0430 and closed at 1100 with a moderate NE wind, at last, producing a first real fall of autumn migrants. After an average of just 20 birds a day since the 19th May we ended today with 143 new birds of 16 species. Among them were a Kärrsångare (Marsh Warbler) and a ‘hat-trick’ of flugsnappare!

Heavy rain until 1000 on a strong SE wind that went W and increased after 1000 to peak at 19 m/s prevented any ringing today, the first day of no ringing since 30th June.

Time taken to catch up on some personal stuff but also Kay has put a final coat of paint on the Lab door and cleaned the Lab. Chris has cleaned the bathroom, including the drains and put up the remaining Tornseglare nest boxes – ready for full occupancy of birds in 2018!!!

Another quiet morning with just 12 new birds of 6 species with only five warblers caught, though a Härmsångare (Icterine Warbler) was pleasing to catch.

A guiding is planned for 1130.

All nets opened at 0415 in light winds that gradually increased and backed to the south-west from west. All nets closed at 1100.

A total of 22 new birds of 9 species, once more dominated by Ärtsångare (Lesser Whitethroat) with 8 caught, but only one Lövsångare (Willow Warbler).

Over the last couple of weeks Lasse has been doing a great job of painting the outside of the Obs – all red paintwork completed and is today busy fitting a new door to the cellar. Working alone, but knows how to get things done!!!

17 nets opened at 0415 with a strong SW wind that was forecast to decrease through the first part of the morning, remaining dry!!!! All nets closed at 0745 with moderate rain finishing ringing for the day.

What a difference a day makes!!! Rain forecast yesterday, so nets opened late but no rain. No rain forecast today but nets closed due to rain!!! What is going on???

A total of 5 new birds of just 3 species. It really needs one of the two Ärtsångare (Lesser Whitethroat) to be re-trapped in the Lebanon to make opening the nets this morning seem worthwhile!

The opening of nets was delayed until 0630 due to a definite forecast of prolonged rain throughout the morning. By 0630, with SMHI still showing rain falling over Landsort, the nets were opened in completely dry conditions and, apart from one or two drops of rain, the morning remained dry. Nets closed at 1200.

A pleasing total of 32 new birds of 13 species, with a good total of 14 Ärtsångare (Lesser Whitethroat). A unexpected 1cy male Bergfink (Brambling) was only the 6th August capture in the history of the Obs and the earliest by eight days.

David and Maya left the island at 0930 giving just two at the Obs overnight: Chris & Kay.

All nets opened at 0400 and closed at 1100 with 24 new birds of 6 species caught. A pleasing total of 12 Ärtsångare (Lesser Whitethroat) and 5 Lövsångare (Willow Warbler) gave some indication of a movement of birds.

Peter left the island this morning to give four at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay, David and Maya.

All 30 nets opened at 0400 with some closed during the morning as the wind increased, with 22 nets closed at 1100.

18 new birds of 11 species including three Härmsångare (Icterine Warbler).

Johann and the two girls left today to give five overnight:

A good movement of Mindre Korsnäabb over the Obs with Bosse & Janne counting 264 in several flocks and one’s & two’s.

Bosse & Janne left the island in the early afternoon, with Johan and his two children arriving this afternoon to give five at the Obs overnight.

12 nets opened at 0430 in a strong W wind that gradually increased allowing 23 nets to be open by the time all nets were closed at 1100.

A better catch than in the recent few days with 19 new birds of 8 species including the first Gök (Common Cuckoo) of the year.

Afternoon will be spent reducing canopy height around some of the nets now that the breeding season has finished.

Net opening restricted to just 10 nets due to strong to very strong wind from the west. These nets opened at 0500 and the last few closed at 1015 as the light rain showers increased to a spell of heavier showers.

An excellent days migration watching, by Bosse in the morning and by Bosse & Janne in the afternoon/ evening. Some of the highlights are shown below:

Due to very strong winds opening of nets was delayed until 0500 when 7 nets were opened and closed at 1145.

Nearly 7 hours for 7 birds of 7 species in 7 nets !!!!
Fortunately for Bosse one of them was a Grönsångare (Wood Warbler), adding to his species list for the year.

Bosse & Svante spent a very rewarding morning at Vaderbunken, with some of the highlights from an excellent period of migration watching shown below.

Svante left the island in mid-morning to give five at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay, Bosse, Lena and Oscar.

21 nets opened at 0600 after overnight rain, but strong wind restricted the number of nets we could open. By the time nets closed at 1100 onlt 17 were opened. Only 9 new birds of 5 species.

Bosse was out early migration watching with not a lot seen.

Svante, a re-joining member arrived this morning to stay overnight.

Strong overnight winds continued in the morning, delaying opening of any nets until 0445 when 22 were opened with the remaining 8 opened in stages through the morning as the wind gradually deceased. All 30 nets closed at 1100 with 13 new birds of 7 species caught to give 3500 now for the year.

Bosse was up and out early with some decent migration watching – the best birds being shown in the table below.

at 1630 a lecture was given to Byalaget, with an excellent turn-out of 30 people attending. A very enjoyable presentation to give and a great opportunity to explain a bit more about the work we all do and to thank everyone for their support and the way in which we have been made most welcome on the island.

Early rain with a threat of thunder delayed opening until 0630 when all 30 nets were opened, some being closed at 1100 and the rest at 1145.
