Another misty start gave way to a considerably brighter and sunnier day today. 200 birds were ringed today including another Siberian Chiffchaff (Sibirisk gransångare). Frustratingly, both a Goshawk (Duvhök) and a Long-eared Owl (Hornuggla) evaded capture first thing, the former was seen again later in the morning before heading out to sea toward the mainland. Two Woodlark (Trädlärka) migrated over Södra Udden where 95 Brent Goose (Prutgås) were also counted and four Purple Sandpiper (Skärsnäppa) were on a small skerry to the west. After a calm start the wind very quickly picked up to a brisk southeasterly, which continued all day. It remained overcast all day and despite the threat of rain stayed mostly dry. Throughout the night we heard flocks of Barnacle Geese (Vitkindad gås) passing over, this continued all day and we counted 2340 heading SW during the day, although the real figure must surely have been much higher, with many birds also passing distantly out to the west. 155 birds were ringed, including a Great Grey Shrike (Varfågel) and the first four Bullfinch (Domherre) of the autumn. A Great Grey Shrike was also present at Södra Udden.

Overnight rain continued into this morning which meant we were again unable to open the nets, eventually it reduced to a drizzle which continued on and off until the afternoon. For the first time in a while there was noticeable migration over this island, most obvious were 600 Woodpigeons (Ringduva), several hundred Fieldfare (Björktrast), smaller numbers of the other thrush species and good numbers of finches and Reed Bunting (Sävsparv). 66 birds were ringed this morning, including the first Yellow-browed Warbler (Tajgasångare) of the year – tentatively aged as a juvenile on the basis of some retained juvenile upper tail coverts. Sadly for today’s visiting birders, the Brown Shrike (Brun törnskata) had seemingly departed and was not seen all day. A Great Grey Shrike (Varfågel) was seen at Saltmar, where a group of Bearded Tits (Skäggmes) were also heard calling, but proved elusive. Two Woodlarks (Trädlärka) flew south and the Siberian Chiffchaff (Sibirisk gransångare), a ringed individual, was still in the village.

A quieter day today with 61 birds ringed this morning. The Brown Shrike (Brun törnskata) was still present all day and showed well at times for the several hundred visiting birders. Additionally, a Yellow-browed Warbler (Tajgasångare) was north of Saltmar, a Peregrine (Pilgrimsfalk) flew south over Fårhagen, where there was also a Woodlark (Trädlärka) and a Siberian Chiffchaff (Sibirisk gransångare) was seen in the village. A frosty cold start gave way to a clear, crisp day. 96 birds were ringed at Bredmar, including the first Penduline Tit (Pungmes) to ever be ringed on the island, possibly the same juvenile that was seen last weekend. The first Jack Snipe (Dvärgbeckasin) of the autumn was also ringed, as well as the first Redpolls (Gråsiska) of the autumn. The sleepy afternoon lull was quickly forgotten when we received a call about a Brown Shrike (Brun törnskata) at Saltmar, found by two visiting Dutch birders. The bird, an adult male, represents only the second record of this species in Sweden (the first was ringed on Nidingen, Halland in October 1984). It showed on and off all afternoon in the scrubby area opposite the memorial at Saltmar. The first visiting twitchers managed to see it before it finally dropped out of sight, but it was not seen to leave this area.
