Overnight rain delayed opening of nets until 0600 with a couple of light showers in the first part of the session before it cleared to some sunshine by the time netting finished at 1100.

A total of 37 new birds of 11 species including an Ortolan Bunting (Ortolansparv), the first ever caught at the Obs in the autumn period, with most (30) caught in May and just one in June. This is the second for the year, the first being on 1st May.

Mikael headed north as soon as the early rain cleared, reporting more ducks and waders than expected, but fewer passerines.

Some nets replaced today.

Guided talks this year to over 400 people have included discussion about how we all need to play our part in helping our environment. This has proved to be a popular and thought-provoking part of the talk, with much discussion and positive feedback.

Disappointed today to see that the sides of the road on the island are being trimmed, removing the last of the flowers that insects need. This is the second time this year it has been done, the first in May!!! It is a challenge to change the minds of the public when the evidence of poor land management by the system is so clearly on view in a nature reserve!!!

Mats spent the morning in the south before leaving on the 1330 ferry, leaving just two at the Obs overnight: Chris & Kay.

Moderate to strong wind limited the number of nets open from 0430 until 1100 with a disappointing number of just 8 new birds of 6 species, but including a relatively late Icterine Warbler (Härmsångare).

Mats spent the morning migration watching but it was very quiet for birds. Mats has replaced the cooker hood and fan in the kitchen and brought out a lot of bird food.

This afternoon a Board meeting was held at the Obs.

David and Vanessa left the island this morning to give three at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay & Mats.

Nets opened from 0430 until 1100 though strong North-west winds restricted the number of nets that could be opened. Despite this a good total of 77 new birds of 15 species including the first Goldcrest (Kungsfågel) of the autumn.

An excellent days ringing with 318 new birds of 17 species including the first Yellow Wagtail (Gulärla) of the year. This is the highest day capture for any August from 1988- to date (176 on 26th August 2014).

236 Willow Warbler (Lövsångare) represented a new day record for autumn (207 on 7th Sept 1995) with good totals for a range of other species also in particular 19 Garden Warbler (Trädgårdssangare).

Limited net opening due to strong to very strong south-west to westerly winds that gradually decreased.

Nets opened at 0415 until 1100 with Caroline joining in the session, which produced 23 new birds of 5 species including a Whinchat (Buskskvätta).

Raul, Janne & Bosse headed to SUDD with Mikael and Niklas heading north. All reported it quiet for migration though 4 Sandwich Tern (Kentsk tärna) were seen at each location, quite probably the same birds.

Janne & Bosse left the island today to give 6 at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay, Raul, Caroline, Mikael and Niklas.

Janne & Niklas headed to the north for the morning, while Bosse spent the first part of the morning in SUDD before heading up to Bredmar.

Strong overnight winds were slow to decrease, so limited net opening from 0415 until 1145 with a light shower of rain for 10 minutes around 1000 – more like a mist.

A total of 31 new birds of 10 species including the second Grasshopper Warbler (Gräshoppsångare) of the autumn and third Barred Warbler (Höksångare) of the year.

Bosse & Niklas spent the morning in the north and reported it quiet for migration but three Cuckoo (Gök) and a Bluethroat (Blåhake) were seen.

Nets opened at 0415 and closed at 1100 with 63 new birds of 13 species, including 29 Lesser Whitethroat (Ärtsångare) a new day record.

Almost calm conditions at first light with the wind remaining largely East through the morning and around 3-4 m/s.

Niklas & Janne headed north in the morning and reported good numbers of warblers moving off the island.

I forgot to mention yesterday that Janne saw the Wild Boar north of Saltmar.
