30th October 2019

94 birds were ringed this morning including the biggest catch of redpolls so far this year, the vast majority of these being Lesser Redpolls (Brunsiska), with only one Mealy Redpoll (Gråsiska). Two Jack Snipe (Dvärgbeckasin) were at Saltmar while a Water Rail (Vattenrall) was at Bredmar, having been present a couple of days. Despite there being none seen on Landsort so far, it’s worth noting the historic invasion of Pine Grosbeak (Tallbit) taking place in Scandinavia at the moment – they are being seen daily in large numbers just to the north of us on Torö, so hopefully it’s only a matter of time before some make it here!

27th October 2019

Another wet start to a windy day albeit less so than yesterday. Again no nets were opened. A fall of migrants involving a few hundred thrushes (trastar), Robins (Rödhakar) and Goldcrests (Kungsfåglar) was evident this morning. Among these were a late Redstart (Rödstjärt), a Black Redstart (Svart rödstjärt), three Chiffchaff (Gransångare) and most surprisingly – a Scarlet Rosefinch (Rosenfink), foraging on a rowan south of the obs, the latest autumn record in Stockholms län! Three 1cy Golden Eagle (Kungsörn) flew south over the obs at around 12:30, they presumably then flew back north as three were later seen at Ankarudden. 4 Rough-legged Buzzard (Fjällvråk), a Goshawk (Duvhök) and a Merlin (Stenfalk) all contributed to a great raptor day.

26th October 2019

A wet and windy day today and no nets were opened. The rain finished at about 9am and the wind also picked up around this time. There was no sign of the Isabelline Wheatear (Isabellastenskvätta) during a search of the south end of the island this morning, but the conditions were less than ideal and there are plenty of places that it could hide from the wind! A Black Redstart (Svart rödstjärt) was by the obs and a Grey Wagtail (Forsälare) was seen at Kummelhålet. At Södra Udden a flock of Twite (Vinterhämpling) was foraging.

Wind: Southwest to northwest

Cloud cover: 3-8/8
Precipitation: Rain until about 09:00

25th October 2019

Another surge of migrants passed through this morning after a few quiet days, 120 birds were ringed – including a Firecrest (Brandkronad kungsfågel), the second of the year. An Isabelline Wheatear (Isabellastenskvätta) was discovered at Vadarbunkern, where it stayed put until at least 16:30 and with the current weather conditions it seems unlikely it will move on at the moment! It is the first record for Landsort and there are 24 previous accepted Swedish records.

Rain this morning meant no nets were opened. A Radde’s Warbler (Videsångare) was found at 10:30 in a patch of alders to the southeast of Lotstornet. Seen well initially it became increasingly elusive and there was no sign through most of the afternoon despite much searching. Frustratingly, both a Goshawk (Duvhök) and a Long-eared Owl (Hornuggla) evaded capture first thing, the former was seen again later in the morning before heading out to sea toward the mainland. Two Woodlark (Trädlärka) migrated over Södra Udden where 95 Brent Goose (Prutgås) were also counted and four Purple Sandpiper (Skärsnäppa) were on a small skerry to the west. After a calm start the wind very quickly picked up to a brisk southeasterly, which continued all day. It remained overcast all day and despite the threat of rain stayed mostly dry. Throughout the night we heard flocks of Barnacle Geese (Vitkindad gås) passing over, this continued all day and we counted 2340 heading SW during the day, although the real figure must surely have been much higher, with many birds also passing distantly out to the west. 155 birds were ringed, including a Great Grey Shrike (Varfågel) and the first four Bullfinch (Domherre) of the autumn. Overnight rain continued into this morning which meant we were again unable to open the nets, eventually it reduced to a drizzle which continued on and off until the afternoon. For the first time in a while there was noticeable migration over this island, most obvious were 600 Woodpigeons (Ringduva), several hundred Fieldfare (Björktrast), smaller numbers of the other thrush species and good numbers of finches and Reed Bunting (Sävsparv). A Great Grey Shrike (Varfågel) was seen at Saltmar, where a group of Bearded Tits (Skäggmes) were also heard calling, but proved elusive. 5th October 2019

A frosty cold start gave way to a clear, crisp day. 96 birds were ringed at Bredmar, including the first Penduline Tit (Pungmes) to ever be ringed on the island, possibly the same juvenile that was seen last weekend. The first Jack Snipe (Dvärgbeckasin) of the autumn was also ringed, as well as the first Redpolls (Gråsiska) of the autumn. The sleepy afternoon lull was quickly forgotten when we received a call about a Brown Shrike (Brun törnskata) at Saltmar, found by two visiting Dutch birders. The bird, an adult male, represents only the second record of this species in Sweden (the first was ringed on Nidingen, Halland in October 1984). It showed on and off all afternoon in the scrubby area opposite the memorial at Saltmar. The first visiting twitchers managed to see it before it finally dropped out of sight, but it was not seen to leave this area.
