22nd July 2018

Restricted net opening at 0345 due to strong west wind which decreased a bit during the morning. Nets closed at 1145

8 hours, 8 birds, 8 species – ate lunch!!!

A guided talk given to two people from 1130 until 1230 – both friends of island residents. No summer visitors or day-trip visitors!

In the afternoon we replaced rotten boardwalks near the pond and in the south round – warm work, but hopefully the last ‘major’ repair jobs now done ready for the autumn season. One of the few plus-sides of this dry weather is that the vegetation is growing so slowly there is less trimming to do!!!

20th July 2018

Nets opened at 0415 and closed at 1145 with 24 new birds of 15 species including the first autumn Wood Warbler (Grönsångare), a 1cy bird. The best bird however was a Grey Wagtail (Forsärla) another 1cy bird and the first ever trapped at the Observatory.

A guided talk was given to 3 adults and 2 youngsters from 1130 until 1230, with a film crew arriving towards the end of it. Unfortunately they had to head north for 1300hrs and did not return, despite having undertaken to do so. After 1600, a couple of phone calls unanswered and a few hours wasted we gave up. Seems they left the island at 1400 and failed to let us know!!

With no rain on the island for a month and none forecast could we make a couple of requests to readers of the diary. Firstly, those of you visiting the island – please do not discard your used cigarettes on the ground, not even the road. Everywhere is so dry it will just take one mistake and the results could be a disaster!!! Today we have found 8 discarded cigarette ends!!!

Secondly, if you can, please find a way of putting water out for the birds – they need it to bathe (getting rid of parasites in the feathers) and to drink. It only needs to be shallow water, not deep, and with sloping sides so birds can walk in and out. They will appreciate it greatly and reward you with easy bird-watching and hours of enjoyment – THANK YOU, on behalf of the birds!!!

There will be two at the Obs overnight: Chris & Kay.

Also of note was the catching of 11 Starling (Stare), an autumn day record for the Obs: part of a much larger flock that were feeding on cherries near the canopy nets.

Göran, who arrived on the last ferry yesterday and left early this morning must be one of the luckiest birders I know. Having arrived with the strong wish to see a Sandwich Tern (Kentsk tärna) he was fortunate enough to report seeing one flying west past the south of the island this morning!!!!
