Zero birds caught today

14th June 2018

A strong SE wind prevented some nets being opened but the rest were opened at 0415 and closed at 1100 with just three new birds – all Linnet (Hämpling).

Three nest boxes checked this afternoon with a further 8 Great Tit (Talgoxe) chicks ringed from two boxes and a brood of six Redstart (Rödstjärt) at the last one to give 17 birds of three species for the day.

Further disappointment at the Swift (Tornseglare) site with another egg found below the box. It may be that a new male has taken over the site as it is known that they will sometimes eject the old males eggs to ensure he will be looking after his own offspring. We will wait and see but for the time being one bird is in the box most of the day being regularly visited by another. At least two further swift are associating with the site, visiting the Observatory often through the day.

There will be two at the Obs overnight: Chris & Kay.

13th June 2018

Nets opened at 0415 and closed at 1145 in a moderate SE wind that brought occasional light showers from 0900.

A total of 22 new birds of 12 species including (at long last!!) the first Common Rosefinch (Rosenfink) of the season.

At the Swift (Tornseglare) nest box there was a combination of some very good news and some bad. Early in the morning an egg was seen at the entrance of the box, which was then pushed out by one of the birds to smash on the ground. So the good news is there is definite proof of breeding but a sad way to find out. On the plus side it seems that it is not uncommon for Swift to push eggs out of a nest. Exact reasons unknown but might be just clumsy or possibly due to the egg being infertile. On the plus side the female remains in the nest almost constantly now, so must be incubating further eggs. Fingers crossed for a successful outcome.

The drama continued through the morning when a third bird entered the box to be challenged by the male. Meanwhile the female could be heard at the back of the nest box, calling. They remained with legs locked together and biting each others necks for over one hour before the male (ringed yesterday) evicted the challenger. High drama!!!

Less dramatic at the Obs overnight with just Chris & Kay.

Light rain early in morning delayed netting until 0600 with all nets closed at 1100 with just three new birds of three species, including a very young Magpie (Skata) which was walking along the path towards the nets!!!

Better result in the afternoon when nest boxes produced 23 nestlings of three species: Blue Tit (Blåmes) 8, Great Tit (Talgoxe) 9 and Pied Flycatcher (Svartvit flugsnappare) 6, giving 26 birds for the day.

A strange addition to the ringing totals for the day and a new species for the year when a Swift (Tornseglare) was seen trying to leave a nest box but got stuck with one wing in and one out. Ladder out and bird retrieved, ringed and released none the worse for it’s adventure!! Only the second of the species ever ringed at the Observatory.

A pair of Woodcock (Morkulla) flushed from near one of the nest boxes but no sign of a nest or young.

There will be two at the Obs overnight: Chris & Kay.

The young should be ready to ring later in the week. Female Teal observed from 2m on her nest near Saltmar. Sat very tight so must be near hatching.

Bosse had a couple of good sightings over the weekend. The first was yesterday evening when a male King Eider (Prakejder) flew past the southern tip of the island. Today he saw a Turtle Dove ((Turturduva) near SUDD and then to finish off his hat-trick he heard Marsh Warbler (Kärrsångare) singing near Norrhamn.

The weather forecast was for SE winds, so there was some level of anticipation this morning, but at 0345 the wind was almost calm and then increased, but from the NE!!!

Another quiet days ringing here in paradise, with just 17 new birds of 6 species. The female Goldcrest (Kungsfåfel) that was trapped had a very well developed brood patch, indicating it is breeding nearby.

We started to play the call of Swift (Tornseglare) at the nest boxes on the wall of the Obs three days ago and today have had either one bird three times or three birds once, visiting to investigate the site. Looks promising for the season ahead!!!

Only 18 new birds of 7 species caught.

Lasse leaves this afternoon to give three at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay & Håkan.

20th May 2018

Nets opened at 0345, some closed at 1100 as the wind increased and the rest closed at 1145 after a guided talk.

Ebba joined us again for the ringing session but it was very quiet with just 9 new birds of 5 species caught.

Niklas headed up to the north for migration watching, with Mats & Lasse at SUDD until they returned around 0900 to help get the rubbish from the village and a little from the Observatory up to Norrhamn for the rubbish ferry.

At SUDD they spotted a Black Woodpecker (Spillkråka) coming to land from over the sea.

A very good guiding from around 1115 until 1230 with 22 adults and one child – excellent for a mid-May open guiding.

Niklas left on the afternoon ferry and Mats leaves later, with Håkan arriving (we think)

There will be four at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay, Lasse and Håkan.

Nets opened at 0345 in a light N wind that moved to the S during the morning. Nets closed at 1100.

At 0600 we were joined by Ebba for the morning and finished the session with 30 new birds of 8 species.

Niklas & Lasse headed north in the morning, Niklas being early enough to see the Wild Boar (Vildsvin) near Saltmar. Both saw what is assumed to be the same Marsh Harrier (Brun kärrhök) that we later saw at Bredmar. Their sighting of the day was a female Golden Oriole (Sommargylling) migrating north. A summary of their more interesting sightings will be included later.

Afternoon will be spent starting the checking of Starling (Stare) nest boxes.

There will be five at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay, Mats, Lasse and Niklas.

18th May 2018

Nets opened at 0345 and closed at 1100 with some nets remaining closed due to the wind which was mostly from N but veering to NE.

A total of 30 new birds of 7 species was decent enough given the prolonged period of N to NE winds that we have had over the last few days. Overall, catches are lower than average.

A clean of the Obs this afternoon before members arrive for the weekend.

Steve left the island on the first ferry and Chloe leaves on the 1500 ferry. Great to have had their company and help over the last week or so and a real surprise to see Steve on Monday – not expected!!!

There will be four at the Obs overnight: Chris, Kay, Lasse & Niklas.

15th May 2018

Nets opened at 0345 and 1145 after a guided talk.

A total of 26 new birds of 12 species including (at last) the first Garden Warbler (Trädgårdssångare) of the year and, best bird of the day, a Red-flanked Bluetail (Blåstjärt), only the third ever trapped at the Observatory, after one in 2004 (4th Oct) and one in 2010 (11th May). The bird was released at Saltmar to minimise the risk of it being re-trapped during the morning.

A Black Kite (Brun glada) was observed migrating north past the Obs.

Guided talk given to 13 people from 1130 until 1245.

There will be four at the Obs tonight; Chris, Kay, Chloe and Steve.
