9th April 2019

A cold and blustery day with a light sprinkling of snow this afternoon; we were again only able to open a few sheltered nets this morning. Only 13 birds were ringed but we did retrap a six-year-old Chaffinch (Bofink) that was ringed back in 2014 as a 2cy.

The highlight was two Black Redstart (Svart Rödstjärt) at South Udden. A Kestrel (Tornfalk) was still present around the south.

Tonight there will be two at the obs: Matt and Espen.

7th April 2017

The threat of rain stayed with us all morning as the edge of a weather system passed over us, but it never materialised into more than a few spots. In the afternoon the fine weather returned albeit with greater cloud cover. The wind was almost non-existent in the morning with light northwesterlies by the afternoon.

This morning produced our highest catch of the season so far, with 87 new birds ringed (but only three recaptures). A good variety of species were represented including our first Fieldfare of the season.

4th April 2019

A good ringing session this morning with three firsts for the year and Goldcrests still moving through steadily. The highlight was two separate Black Redstarts caught at Bredmar, meaning we’ve already surpassed last year’s total of one. An early Wryneck was seen briefly at Bredmar this morning before departing to the west and the Common Pheasant was seen again at the north of the island.

In the evening we managed to read the metal ring on a Common Gull at Västerhamn and found out that it had been ringed as an adult in the very same area back in 2010, with ours being the only sighting since then!

A sheltered sunny spot near the obs was a popular basking spot for the first emerging Adders of the season today, with at least two seen soaking up the rays.

3rd April 2019

Throughout the day an influx of Goldcrest filtered up the island from the south. Some were caught in the morning ringing session and most of these were very lightweight (under 5 grams), presumably as they had just finished a long sea crossing, aided by the wind switching to a more southerly direction. One of the birds ringed at Bredmar this morning was then photographed feeding at close range at Norrhamn in the evening.

The most notable sighting of the day was a Common Pheasant seen at the north this morning and heard again this evening, the first seen here since 2016 according to records on Artportalen.

There will be three at the obs again tonight: Matt, Espen and Emma

The first ringing day of the season came with the highlight of a Dunnock wearing a French ring, we weren’t expecting our first control quite so quickly but hopefully it is a good omen for the season!

31st March 2019

A morning seawatch in a brisk wind produced the usual flock of Common Eiders with a few Long-tailed Ducks and Common Scoters mixed in. A Common Guillemot and several Razorbills also flew past and a Woodcock flushed up from by the Lighthouse

Three at the obs tonight – Matt, Espen and Micke

30th March 2018

Two new members arrived at the obs this afternoon who will stay at the obs tonight, making four of us at the obs: Matt, Espen, Mathias and Vera.

Migration continues at a slow pace with finch numbers on the up, including several Brambling. A Woodcock was seen this evening by the visiting members.

28th March 2018

Hello from Espen and Matt,
the new seasonal wardens at Landsort Fågelstation.

We both arrived over the last week, Matt set up
the first nets initially with Pelle and Liam and we finished the job today.
This morning we started with an hours seawatch and in the evening cycled up to
the north end to see a new part of the island. The weather has given us an
incredible welcome to the island as it’s been calm and very sunny, so we are
making the most of it while it lasts!

On this morning’s seawatch we had several small
groups of Long-tailed Ducks and a group of Common Scoter among the large flock
of around 400 Common Eider. Some small flocks of Razorbill also flew past, as
well as one of the regular White-tailed Eagles.

On the vismig side a few dribs and drabs have
started to come through from the south and we are hoping that this will pick up
further in coming days as the good weather looks set to hold for a little while
at least.

The surprise of the day was not a bird but the
Eurasian Beaver that swam past us at close range this evening at the north end. Typically,
neither of us had cameras at hand but it was a great experience nonetheless and
a new mammal species for both of us!

11th November 2018

Day spent finishing with all of the end of season tasks – cleaning the lab, Obs etc.

Lasse left today to give two at the Obs overnight; Chris & Kay

This is our last night on Landsort, marking the end of our stay which commenced in late March, during which time there has been 215 days of ringing, with only 9 days lost due to bad weather. It also marks the end of our 5th year here, so Landsort and Observatory life have become part of our day to day existence. A full report on the 2018 season will be available on the website after the end of the month.

So, it’s time to say goodbye but we must thank a lot of people for their support, friendship and help during our stay here. The Board, members, guests, summer visitors, tourists and the many island friends we have been fortunate enough to meet since 2013 have left a huge impression on us both. Whilst we are looking forward to being at our ‘other island home’ (especially the wood fire!!) we leave with a big feeling of sadness too. Thank you everyone and we hope that the Observatory continues to develop and grow in the way in which we’ve been lucky enough to witness in the last few years.

We know we have not always pleased everyone, but that’s life – we have done our best!

Take care everyone and thanks for everything
Chris och Kay!!!

Lena, Bosse and Niklas arrived on the mid-morning ferry, with Bosse and Niklas straight out to do some migration watching together with a potentially new member, Mattias. Quiet for birds but plenty of White-tailed Eagle (Havsörn) and one Golden Eagle (Kungsörn).

There will be 7 at the Obs overnight; Chris, Kay, Lena, Bosse, Niklas, Rasmus and Jacob.
