Nets opened at 0530 and closed at 1145 with a very pleasing total of 130 new birds of 16 species – very welcome after the recent few days of low numbers.

Although most birds were the expected range of autumn migrants a Videsparv (Rustic Bunting) caught in the last round of the day was by far the best bird caught, only the 14th ever caught here and the first since 2013.

A guiding was given to 25 people from 1130 until 1245.

Afternoon will be spent cleaning ready for weekend visitors.

Despite restricted netting a better total than recently, with 36 new birds of 7 species including 4 Ärtsångare (Lesser Whitethroat) giving a year total of 456, two better than the previous best year (2016). Notable was the complete lack of caught, or calling, Lövsångare (Willow Warbler).

20 nets opened at 0500 and the rest opened during the morning as the wind decreased, with all 30 nets closed at 1100.

A total of 50 new birds of 12 species including the first migrant Järnsparv (Dunnock) of the autumn. Among the 11 Svarthätta (Blackcap) caught was a 1cy male with a dark grey beast and belly, completely lacking in any pale feathering.

Despite the movement of Sparvhök (Sparrowhawk) past the island there were no birds killed in the nets, though the remains of an Enkelbeckasin (Common Snipe) were found in one net. The birds had been plucked and mostly eaten somewhere else and had presumably been dropped when the Sparvhök hit the net.

All bird bags washed and anticipation rising for continued migration.

14 nets opened at 0515 and closed at 1300 with 69 new birds of 14 species – a good mornings ringing after the recent terrible weather.

A Svartvit flugsnappare (Pied Flycatcher) was trapped with a Finnish ring on it. The ring looked very fresh, so probably only ringed a few days ago. Will be interesting to see where and when it was ringed. Our first foreign control of the autumn.

Spent a few hours with Erik & Mats from Natursiden, who have come to the island to find out about the work of the station.

Meanwhile Lasse has drilled drainage holes in the concrete at the entrance to the cellar to fit a drain to allow the water to drain out. After 30 years of occassional flooding, a ‘phone call from Tore has hopefully sorted out the problem! Thanks to him for help yesterday in draining the water out of the cellar and to Lasse for acting so quickly to help.

This afternoon had a member of the public call at the Obs to express concern about the nets at SUDD, in fact they were quite angry. Did my best to calm him down and then Kay & I went down to check. All nets re-closed and in some cases removed from trees where loose bits had become entangled. They did not look good! Some bad PR for the Station unfortunately.

4th September 2017

Nets opened at 0500 – caught three Lax, 2 Cod and 1 flounder!!!!

In truth, no nets opened today in gale to near gale NE winds overnight and heavy, continuous rain all morning!!! A lot of water on the island now!!!!

Sorcha left the island this morning and Kay took the opportunity to travel to Stockholm with her, returning later today to give two at the Obs overnight; Chris & Kay.

Afternoon spent emptying water out of the cellar and ringing Lab. Not too much damage but very wet and more flooding in!

3rd September 2017

With no rain forecast until mid-morning, everyone was up at 0500 to open the nets – outside it started raining!

Janne & Bosse, who were going to run SUDD had the common sense to go back to bed until 0800 and, after a brief attempt at some migration watching, gave the day up as a wash out!!

At Bredmar 9 nets were opened at 0645 and closed 30 minutes later, re-opened at 0900 and closed at 0945 when more long-term rain arrived. A grand total of 1 bird!!!!!

Janne & Bosse will leave at some stage this afternoon giving just Chris, Kay & Sorcha overnight tonight.

Really heavy rain now and a terrible forecast for tomorrow and most of next week.

At Bredmar all nets opened at 0500, some closed at 1100 and the rest at 1145.

A total of 67 new birds of 16 species was a much better morning than recently, with a late Kärrsångare (Marsh Warbler) being of note. This bird was the third latest bird caught at the Observatory, after 1 on 7th September 2008 and 3rd September 2009. At Bredmar, Chris & Kay were helped by Ebba who was on the island overnight, having spent 5 weeks at Ottenby. Ebba ringed 18 of the 67 birds.

At SUDD Bosse and Janne ran the nets, catching 14 new birds of 6 species, to give a total of 81 new birds for the day.

A guided talk was given to 12 people from 1130 until 1300.
